Mugdock Castle
Mugdock Country Park is a 20 min drive from the 'Shire and is a favourite place. It's where Mrs 24601 and I 'hung out' when we first met - it's a great place for kids to explore and enjoy, so we had many a good Saturday and Sunday there.
We took a trip there last weekend. The park is only 2 miles from Milngavie yet is in the district of Stirling.
What I didn't know was that inI1945, Hugh Fraser (later Lord Fraser), owner of the House of Fraser stores, purchased the castle from the Duke of Montrose. The 19th-century Mugdock House burned down in 1966 (when I was born), along with the remaining 16th-century outbuildings.
In 1981 Lord Fraser's son, also Hugh but by then a 'sir', gifted the castle and the surrounding estate to Central Regional Council for use as a country park.
