Zabriskie Point...
...at Death Valley National Park.
We drove to the airport in our son's car to pick up a rental car and after we dropped it back at his house we headed off to Death Valley. Amazingly, neither one of us has ever been there before. It is only a 2.5 hour drive from my son's house in Las Vegas. What a treat. It has to be one of the most unusual and beautiful places on earth. The weather is quite pleasant this time of year.
As we entered the park we came to Zabriskie Point. I knew the name from a bad movie in the 70's, and I suppose there were some scenes of it in the movie but that would have been long escaped my brain. The hills and rock formations are so gorgeous but it was midday and the light was a bit harsh so we decided to come back there for sunset.
We drove on to Dante's View which overlooks the Valley. We were at about 6000 feet and looked across the valley at Mount Telescope which is around 11,000 feet. The land below us in the Valley was nearly 300 feet below sea level. We checked into our room at the "Ranch" and headed back to Zabriskie Point at about 3:30. Now that we have returned to standard time, sunset was at 4:45, but the sun slipped behind the western mountains at about 4:15.
I have included a few other shots. One is a pano taken at the point and another from Dante's View looking north and west across the valley with a good view of the Salt Flats.
