The riot of the Northern Tenant Farmers??
Reading one of the many plaques on this site I learned that the tower is the remains of a church erected in 1338 and :-
"HERE THE NOTHERN TENANT FARMERS CLAIMED THEIR ANCIENT RIGHTS 1620"
I have been unable to find out from exactly what happened, no idea if anyone died but it's something to do with James I needing money.
More importantly though, from chatting up an elderly local gentleman while reading the plaque about ancient rights, I found out that the next building along houses a new ice-cream manufacturer. Apparently its the very best he has ever eaten. Unfortunately it's shut on a Monday
