Yellow Staghorn (Calocera viscosa)

We took a walk into the forest behind the house this morning. A real autumn morning with a misty sun and no wind at all. Last night it was -5°C and it hadn't warmed up much when we were out!
This is a walk we do all the time, partly on a path we have created and partly through an area where we seem to take a different route every time, so no path has been created.
We found a beautiful piece of granite, pink and grey, and almost a cube, of a size to make it perfect for sitting on if it wasn't so cold. How can we have walked here the last 10 years since the forest was felled and never seen this wonderful rock? Then we found this fungi. It's pretty small (2cm high) but the colour means it really stands out. As usual once you start to look on this macro scale you find a whole world of small plants and creatures. The slight cover of frost/snow looks a lot more impressive down here on the ground at mouse eye level.
So, yellow staghorn, Calocera viscosa, not poisonous but as Wikipedia states "edible, but unpalatable".
On the way home we found some frozen chanterelle mushrooms. Enough to add to some commercially grown porcini for a lunchtime omelette.
Now we are off to film studio to see a French film - more later on that!
