Holy Isle, Arran
The island located in Lamlash Bay has a long history as a sacred site, with a spring believed to have healing properties, a hermit's cave and 13th-century monastery remains.The island is now owned by a community of Tibetan monks. The settlements on the island include the Centre for World Peace and Health and a retreat for nuns. The Buddhists welcome visitors but only on foot. The remainder of the island is a nature reserve with wild Eriskay ponies, Saanen goats and Soay sheep.The island is around 2 miles long and half a mile wide. Its highest point is the hill Mullach Mòr.
