Never judge a book by its cover!

It has been some time since I have blipped and there have been lots of reasons why I haven’t, but there is no need to dwell on those. I have made the decision to start blipping again and I hope that I can catch up on your journals over the forthcoming weeks.

Today’s photo is of a fig. Why a fig? Well, I started to cut into it and it occurred to me that on the outside this fig is fairly dull, not particularly attractive and rather unappealing.  However, when I sliced into the fig, the colours and textures were such a contrast. If I had never seen the inside of a fig before I think I would have been quite surprised at the striking colours inside – what a difference there is between the outer appearance and inner beauty.

And then it occurred to me how this is true of so many things in our lives.  We tend to form opinions, judgements and beliefs that are influenced by the way something looks, but perhaps we can easily forget that there is usually far more than initially meets the eye.  That often underneath the tough skin, the drab exterior, there can be something so complex, so beautiful and so very different to what we initially believed.

So maybe this fig can be a reminder to us to try and avoid the tendency we have to judge a book by its cover. Whether it is a person, an experience or an item, appearances can be deceiving.  Be open to explore everything with a beginners mind and try to avoid the temptation to form opinions and judgements.  Live each moment like it is new, after all, each moment is all there ever is.
