Sir Nicholas Winton
I took the train to Maidenhead today to do a bit of shopping. When I was there I decided to go find the statue of Sir Nicholas Winton who is known for saving 669 Czech Jewish children during the war in what is known as the Kindertransport. His story was virtually unknown even in his family. He chose not to ever talk about it after the war. His own wife only became aware of what her husband had done when she discovered some boxes of journals in the loft of their house in the late 80s.
Nicholas Winton was eventually knighted by the Queen for his ‘services to humanity’ and his story was featured on many programmes and even a movie. See here for a particularly moving account.
Also here.
Winton lived in and raised his family in Maidenhead. He died in 2015 at the age of 106.
