Visiting Lochdon

Mull Native Woodlands Group organised a drop in session in Craignure (central to the island) for local tour operators to show what is going on environmentally across the island, as an example there are a number of interesting woodland projects attracting attention. We thought by approaching tour operators this would be a way of passing on the information to visitors to the island. Even though ‘cake’ was on offer there were more of us than them, we will try again but look at it from another angle.

MNWG was set up several years ago when protesting about the use of neonicotinoids on the hillside behind where many of us live, an area for breeding white tailed eagles and where our drinking water is sourced. The protest was successful and the group has thrived gathering over a hundred members within a few months. I suspect unwittingly we have moved into an interesting area, that of promoting and protecting native trees. Members are currently collecting seed from established native woods to send to Kew Seed Bank.

And a recent project is to acquire a plot of land near the village for a tree nursery and today, after the meeting, a few of us visited a property in Lochdon and collected acorns and hazelnuts for the nursery. and.....this is where the grapevine was photographed.
