Day 289/19. Nuthatch stocking up for winter
We have a pair of Nuthatch that are regular visitors to our seed feeder. I found out today that Nuthatches are hoarders in the autumn and save seeds in a cache somewhere for winter eating.
Wherever their cache is, it must be extensive by now...... They are visiting many times a day and seem to take 5 or 6 seeds away at a time. This visit was at lunchtime today.
Nuthatches breed throughout England and Wales and has recently began to breed in southern Scotland. It is a resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatch.
Our two obviously don't live far away. They are also pretty fearless and ignore us looking through the window. The Blue Tits and Coal Tits stay clear of them.
