Dunster Yarn Market
It was late afternoon by the time we arrived in Dunster to admire the Yarn Market. I remember it from a family holiday when I was in my teens.
Built in 1609 on the orders of George Luttrell of Dunster Castle (seen at the top left of the photo), it is octagonal in shape with a large central pier and a tiled roof, for the sale of broadcloth and homespun cloth at a time when Dunster was at the centre of the wool trade. It suffered damage during the Civil War, repaired in 1647 and is now a Grade 1 listed, scheduled monument.
As you see, the weather has been dull and wet all day but we had previously driven across the Quantock Hills, seen a few wild ponies, wandered round Watchet, pottered on the beach at Blue Anchor and visited Dunster Castle. Those DVDs we take on holiday will have to wait, yet again.
