Statue of George Lovelace at Martyrs Museum
The 'Martyrs' were a group of 6 Dorset farm labourers living at Tolpuddle who were sentenced to hard labour and transported (sent by ship) to Australia in 1834. Their sentences were palpably wrong, and they were eventually pardoned. This event fired the trade union movement and Chartism in Britain.
The museum (situated in the houses behind) is situated at the west end of the village. Brief but very informative.
