KwaZulu-Natal near Glencoe. (South Africa)
It felt as if we had been travelling for over 36hrs. In fact, we almost had.
Carnoustie 10.00hrs
Currie 13.35hrs
Edinburgh Airport 16.15hrs
Heathrow 19.05hrs
Johannesburgh 05.30hrs
Battlefields Country Lodge, Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal-Natal, SA, 18.00hrs
We met up with the Soutters and their Airport Transfer Chauffeurs, the Ashbys, at Edinburgh Airport. Our last Costa coffee for a month perhaps and then onwards to British Airways finest - a Boeing 737 to Heathrow and then the top deck (cattle class) of an Airbus A380 to Johannesburg.
The Trolley Dollies were efficient, attentive, clinical and impersonal, the food was good (Chicken Tandoori and full English), the beer was excellent (a BA specific Brewdog IPA), the cutlery was plastic and the seats (leather) were surprisingly uncomfortable despite the extra legroom afforded by a front seat (behind a bulkhead) position. Our flight arrived 30 minutes early, but didn't deliver Bob's hold luggage. We all remained calm and had a grown up discussion with the BA staff at the (busy) lost luggage desk. Yes, the bag was still in London and yes, it would be delivered to our accommodation the following evening.
With that sorted, we headed out for a coffee, a sim card and a Mazda 3 hire car before heading towards the Drakensberg mountains and the central midlands of KwaZulu-Natal. Tomorrow, we planned visits to the Battlefields of the Zulu and Boer wars whilst keeping downwind of Bob who had only the clothes he stood up in.
It had been a long time in coming but the South African adventure had begun.
