What a Folly.

V and I went out on another unseasonal picnic today, heading first to Chipping Norton for a little light shopping with our destination The Rollright Stones which I like to visit regularly.

On the way we had to climb Fish Hill and as we were passing Broadway Tower we decided to call in and have a look.

This "Saxon" tower was designed by James Wyatt in 1794 and built for Lady Coventry in 1799. The folly was meant to resemble a mock castle. It is built on a "beacon" hill where beacons were lit on special occasions. The hill is 1,024 feet high and the tower itself is another 55 feet. Allegedly 16 counties can be seen from the top.
