Ground beetle
This shiny looking specimen is probably newly emerged. It is the ground beetle, Megadromus antarcticus, native to Canterbury, and a very handsome beast. This one was on a rock close the the track I was walking this morning, along the summit of the Port Hills. The southerly wind came up during my walk, with wind but no rain until well after I had returned home. I was almost disappointed, as I was expecting to get wet!
