Empty space behind the barrier was result of last year's devastating fire here, then a few months later was the horrendous blaze at the Glasgow School of Art just further up the street. Heroic work by the Glasgow fire service limited the fires spreading and the local authority now need to many spend millions to regenerate this famous old thoroughfare.
