Walpiri Lands expedition, Day 2.

Another amazing day on this unique and very special trip.

The wind really picked up overnight, blowing our campchairs over and keeping us all awake. The mountain was making its presence known!

We walked partly up Karrku this morning, so that we could see where the entrance to the ochre mine was located, and one of our leaders climbed all the way up and into the mine itself.

We drove into the settlement of Nyrripi and visited the Art Centre, where I took this photo of a very beautiful painting being created. She was an amazing lady, and so intent on her work. Can you imagine sitting like that for long periods of time?

On our way to our campsite near the Ethel Creek Outstation at Emu Bore, O. showed us an intriguing plant, called (it has many names) caustic vine, which is used by many for healing. The Aboriginal people use the caustic latex from the stems to treat skin rashes, sores and wounds. A couple of us travellers tried it, and it worked incredibly quickly and well.

There's a photo of O. holding some caustic vine in Extras, also a derelict car wreck at the Outstation.
