Bindibu Expedition, Day 9

Such a treat today, visiting Helicopter at the Balgo Art Centre. Yes, his name is Helicopter! After injuring himself in his teens he was flown out to a Medical Centre, and somehow ended up being called Helicopter. His family thought they would never ever see him again, but he returned, healed. He's been painting for a good part of his life, as you can see here, and has been enormously successful - and worldwide too.

We drove from Balgo down the Tanami Track (very remote, and not the Tanami Road that is travelled by trucks), through McGuire's Gap, the Lewis Range, past the Pussycat Bore, and on to our Grey Falcon Camp. 

I managed to tear the skin between my thumb and fingers, throwing Mulga wood onto the firewood pile. Note to me: Wear your gloves!!!

Mulga is incredibly hard timber and makes wonderful fires. Just about all our meals were cooked on the campfires. Sometimes we had two fires! One for cooking, and the other for standing around and 'warming'. The nights were often rather cold.

And the sunsets were gorgeous!
