Light and dark

The sun would shine through the still green leaves then be covered in clouds. Most of the time my mom was oohing and ahhing at the height of trees, but occasionally she'd comment on how some should be cut down because they lack leaves. My jokes about not killing things simply because they're transitioning new a new stage of life were lost on her. We do talk past each other a lot of the time, but I listen intently, as if to an unraveling mystery.
