Maternite Suisse d'Elne

went to see this old maternity hospital today. It was set up by a young lady, Elisabeth Eidenitz, to help pregnant refugees from Spain during the Retirada , but later took women from the many camps set up during the German occupation in WW2. Having been previously to one of these camps at Riversaltes it must have been paradise for these poor women with a beautiful restored chateau in a lovely setting. The many photos on display showed how well they were looked after . A number of women and babies also had their lives saved as they smuggled some of those at risk over the border to Spain. Presumably making out they had died in childbirth. The extra is of a few 'cots' set up in one of the rooms. There are very few actual objects there, although a very impressive collection of photos , and from what I could tell their practises were fairly advanced for the time.
