Wellington and the Monument

The Wellington Monument is a 175-foot-high triangular obelisk located on a point of the Blackdown Hills, 3 km south of Wellington in the English county of Somerset. It is a grade II* listed building. The monument was designed to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo and is apparently the highest triangular structure in the world.


I was out with my 'walking group' today and we 'd planned to walk to the monument from the town, but with the weather being as it was, we went to the museum in the town, walked around the town which is well worth the stroll, enjoyed coffee and light lunch before driving up to the monument.  The beautiful avenue leads to the open space where the monument stands.  Long walks are no longer really on any of our radars what with our naughty knees and hip problems! Older age never comes alone and we are all feeling some effects from the advancing years!   We have been meeting up twice a year now for around 23 years, since we did the Adult Duke of Edinburgh Awards!
The views were non existent due to the rain and mist so methinks I will come again on a sunnier day!
