Beggars Bush
Today I had to go to Tesco's to stock up on frozen food -some good offers too.. I do need to get out more ! (smiles)
There has been a pub on this site since 1840 although there was some mention of the name about 20 years earlier. The name is thought to have come from the time when a beggar\tramp died under a hawthorn bush nearby. Because the death happened at adjoining parish boundaries, a dispute arose as to which parish was liable for the burial expences. It took some time to resolve and the issue being raised in the courts. These days there does seem to be a little romance attached to the story. But, it's nice to tell.
The hawthorn bush as long since gone, uprooted during a road widening scheme.
Many attempts by the breweries to change the name has been finally thwarted by much local opposition !
Over the years I've been to quite few parties here but, never really used it as a 'local'.
