The rain rained
A more organised effort at rain in night and thunderstorms through the morning. The Biss braved the high pass and ferocious lighting in the middle Arno valley.
I’ve been reading about the last time the Arno flooded Florence and many other places in November 1966. Parts of the town were 6 metres underwater, 37 people were killed and the raging torrent left 600,000 tonnes of mud in Florence (that’s right - 600,000).
Since then some flood works have been done and a large reservoir created in one area of the headwaters but with climate change you wonder if that will be enough.
It really poured down today . I fiddled with three fireplaces and their irritating flues - elbows, part-lined and a corrugated liner. I’ve gotten to know them better but come to a standstill.
Collected walnuts brought down by the rain later. Much easier to slough off the skins when wet. A mucky business but every now and then a beautiful pre-skinned walnut presents itself bright against the damp leaves.
