Alone on the world

This photo reminded me of the story of a little boy who was abandoned in Paris and is found by Jerome the stonemason.
When he comes into financial trouble after a few years, he writes to his wife that she must get rid of her cow (an important source of wealth) and the boy. She sells the cow, but she keeps the child, who has a happy childhood without having an idea that the mother is not really his mother.
He is later sold to a traveler who falls asleep in the snow in the winter and dies. From then on he is alone and goes out and feels alone in the world.
