Ettal
It was a long slog of a walk today, we climbed nearly 2,000 feet, 1 kilometre of which was extremely steep. Then we had to negotiate climbing down over tree roots to a river bed, I was on my bum at one point. Next, was a 450 metre walk along the river bed along a gorge, with no distinct path, walking over boulders and criss crossing the river which the taxi driver had told us was OK to cross. Then we headed down to the pretty town of Ettal where this monastery was situated. It was an easy walk then to the town of Oberammergau where they hold the Passion play every 10 years. It’s a strange town, very quiet and a bit Disney like with it’s painted buildings. The extra shows some of the terrain we were walking on. The total walk was 12.5 miles and took 7 hours including a short lunch stop.
