Sue and Margie

For five years, Sue has been keeping her granddaughter on Mondays, and now the granddaughter is in kindergarten, so Sue joined me for Monday with Margie.

They got acquainted by describing their favorite hikes in Yosemite. Sue was born in central California, the fourth (and fifth, she has a twin brother) of eight children whose mother craved wilderness and led her babies up the granite mountainsides of Yosemite as soon as they could toddle. Margie left a difficult marriage and moved to San Francisco with her three young children in 1967, just as the hippies began putting long-stemmed roses into the guns of riot police. Margie, like Sue's mother, found nourishment in the giant sequoias and mountain meadows of Yosemite. I listened as they regaled each other with the place names of their holy lands and grabbed a quick portrait of the two of them on the way back to Margie's apartment.
