pepper and salt...

...but why is a mystery, as unlike Robert Brown's bristly cottonwood which has hung on to the common name he gave it, as yet I can't find a reason for it's name.
However a North America pepper and salt is so called because of the contrast between the dark anthers and white petals...or perhaps is a pink peppercorn!
