Chestnuts
There was a blight in the early 20th century that killed most of the magnificent chestnut trees in this country. The seed pods shown here on the ground have been dropped by a stunted, spindly tree that's not much more than a large bush.
The fact that it is so isolated from other chestnuts means that it will likely survive but it will probably never really achieve the status of "Tree"
