Twelfth Night

Well, this is truly the end of the holiday season, time to take down the Christmas decorations and recycle those cards! My mother gave me the tradition of leaving one card up until Candlemas (February 2nd). We nearly always choose the card that Ross's boss sends from Survival International and this year is no exception. The card shows a spectacular display of the Aurora Borealis over a Nenet reindeer herder's camp in Siberia. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights (or Mirrie Dancers as they are known on Shetland) several times in 2012. It is a wonderful sight, an awesome reminder of the universe strutting its stuff. Twelfth Night, or Epiphany, of course also represents the time in the Christian calendar when the Magi arrive to welcome the newborn Christ Child, guided by the light of a star in the night sky. May the blessings of the universe shower upon us all as we venture forth into this unknown new year and may our woundedness be healed.
