Normally dragons are considered to be hostile but the Ghent Dragon looks down from the Belfry tower onto the city and apparently protects it from danger. Everywhere its image can be seen in the centre as a reminder. We were greeted by the wonderful sound of the carilloneur playing a wide variety of music on the 54 bells for an hour as we wandered around the old Belgian city before taking a boat trip through its ancient canals.
