Walburg Restaurant

Today, I finally had a long-planned and long-overdue lunch with my best friend at the "world famous" Walburg Restaurant in the small town of Walburg, Texas, about 5 miles north-northeast of Georgetown in the greater Austin area.

There are many communities of German and Czech origin in Texas. Many have done a wonderful job of preserving their culture. The Walburg Restaurant - while quite possibly not quite world famous, is well known in Texas, and serves wonderful German food. They also host a very popular Oktoberfest that I've had the privilege to attend in past years.

Homemade sausage, with hot potato salad and sauerkraut, with warm bread, followed by cheesecake. Ahhhhh... but no beer for me, as I was driving, and have more reasons than most to abhor and avoid driving after any drinking.

The Walburg Restaurant, fairly historic on its own merits, is in the former H.Y. Doerning Dry Goods store, which formerly served the town of Walburg as its general store for many a year. The unusual facade on this building, visible where the signage is painted (and also below the awning, obscured by the shade) is made of stamped tin. This was a common ceiling treatment in buildings of this and earlier eras, but is unusual in my experience for an exterior building front.

Auf Dich!
