Backstage

No this isn't backstage at a theatre (as such) but if high street shops, restaurants and cafes are "on stage" then the grungy alleyways connecting delivery lanes and loading bays to the business fronts are a kind of "backstage" - where all the stuff (exhaust outlets, a/c units, chimneys, cables, wires, plumbing etc) that businesses and premises owners don't especially want to be seen are very much strewn about and highly visible. This time I am looking up a bit - not at the alleyway floor itself.
