Kirknewton Rocks
On our way to Almondell Country Park, just outside Kirknewton we passed this unusual rock structure and, naturally, chucked the car into the verge out of the traffic stopped for a blip. From this structure we could see there were others further along but, in the absence of any safe parking, cut our inspection down to the most brief. As we proceeded it became clear that there are no parking facilities nearby.
There being no information on site I resort to Google for the following:-
The structures are the result of a competition for a design to celebrate the year of History, Heritage and Archeology, depicting Order and Chaos, a reminder of Ancient Man, defence against battleaxe-wielding attackers, keeping the Romans at bay and the Iron Age fortress at Kaimes. The stones themselves, of volcanic basalt, were donated by the Damahoy Estate. I have no information to hand as to the builders but the winning design came from a P2 pupil at Kirknewton Primary School.
We continued to the Mid Calder carpark for our walk to Almondell Visitor Centre, (along the River Almond the colour of strong tea) to watch a salmon leaping at the weir and to sit in sunshine watching the many tits squabbling on the birdfeeders, large white and red admiral butterflies as we sipped soup from the cafe.
