One of the few survivors
This tree is one of a very few that have survived the ravages of man in Australia. During the 19th and 20th century the land of Australia was pillaged by settlers for it's timber. As usual when money is involved human greed was unstoppable. The only thing that stopped the relentless deforestation was that they ran out of trees to cut down.
This tree was probably deemed unsuitable. It has survived.
What is interesting about this is the size of the tree. Thay all used to be this size. Now when we see a tree of a quarter the size of this we think we are looking at a large tree but they are as nothing compared to those that were there before.
So in terms of conservation although great strides have been made over the last fifty years we must not be complacent. It would be nice to think that in the future we might be able to once again see trees grow to this size.
