Trajan Arch, Benevento.

Travel day 1:-

Arrived Ciampino 10 mins ahead of schedule, luggage came up quickly, and hire car delivered promptly.  Found our way out of the airport without any trouble, and headed off southward towards our first goal, an unspoilt Roman city near Campobasso.  Nobody had told the sat nav about the fairs on route, with corresponding road closures etc.
Now, there are 2 main routes south ignoring the famed autostrada del sole.  One route is ok for Campobasso, and the other is not. Guess what?   
Correct!   Wewizoanrawrangroaad.  (Scottish vernacular for having taken the incorrect route.)
So, having missed that opporchancity, we later explored the Teatro Romano in Benevento.   It's a whopper, but otherwise unspectacular. 
Dined alfresco beside the Arco Traiano, dating from 1600ish but much restored and titivated over the intervening centuries.  Spectacular nonetheless.
Up early tomorrow to stuff the meter in the local car park, then off to Noci.
