From South America to Comrie

 
One of the pleasures of Open Studios is that you meet artists and  have the time to talk to them about their work and inspiration.
 
 
Today it was textile Artist to the Outlander TV series for 4 seasons, Helen Gallogly now living in Comrie and on the Perthshire Open Studios trail.
 
Helen, a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone Art College  in Dundee was featured in Vogue as one of the bright young up and coming designers.
 
Her latest design, hanging on the wall behind her, was inspired by her travel around South America in 2012.
 
She says:
“I had intended developing this work long before, but numerous house moves, Outlander plus two children kept me busy. 
While travelling around South America I found myself less interested in the big typically touristic sites and more so in smaller, unseen, everyday, overlooked subjects. 
I wasn’t really aware of this until I started looking back at my photos and drawings, things like seed pods, banana plants, weeds, farm animals, trees, outbuildings.
 A Bolivian woman descaling fish became central to the design. I wanted to pull her out of the photo, of the research and elevate her; above the landscape she’s part of and above the church. Something of a reclaiming of her place within her country, above the infiltrated religion that dominates Bolivia and the surrounding countries. She becomes monumental.”
As for Outlander, Helen is not able show examples of it that work. Pity. I was looking forward to seeing it.
