It started with simple signs which conveyed nuggets of information - Kind Woman Lives Here, Will Pay Money for Jobs, Bad Dog. But, over time, the messages became more complex and the symbols more sophisticated.

The sign near this farm’s gate carried the promise of a dry bed and a warm meal but also mentioned the atmosphere of regret that surrounded the farm and its lonely mistress and warned the traveler against allowing her to become too close - in many ways, her need for company was more profound than any guests’ need for food and warmth.
