Great Crested Grebe
I've spotted a couple of these grebes in the middle of the lake at Stover on my last few visits. Someone said they were juveniles but I've not got a close enough view before today.
This bird was feeding in the narrow channel of water which is the outflow of the lake. It was there when I arrived and still there when I left a couple of hours later. Meanwhile, the other grebe was in their usual place on the lake.
I did my usual patrol around with little hope of seeing very much. The park is always very busy at weekends and I didn't get there until mid afternoon.
I was surprised to see the grebe still feeding as I walked to the car and couldn't resist trying for a few more shots.
The bank is very crowded with vegetation and the clear spaces are few and far between so I was dodging about trying to guess where the little blighter would pop out of the water.
Suddenly there it was right in front of me and with a fish in it's beak.
"Quick! Press the shutter!"
Just at that moment a reed blew into view :-( (1st extra)
By the time I had adjusted my position the fish had all but disappeared down the grebe's throat (2nd extra)
Screams of frustration
