Through the arch

Today we went to visit an exhibition in Appleby, an exhibition of images, artefacts and stories of Appleby past and present Appleby Times. It is currently showing at an empty shop in town. It's an interesting collection and a nice display. It is all part of Appleby being a Heritage Action Zone, of which there are currently twenty such projects throughout England. They are initiatives designed to use a town's built and written history to promote itself as a place to live and visit. (I am not sure we need any more visitors - the place is always full of them.)

Anyway I went to take a picture similar to one I saw at the exhibition - taken from the church cloisters and showing the broad avenue of Boroughgate sweeping from the church and the market cross uphill to the castle. Appleby was once the county town of Westmorland and its importance is reflected in this impressive street.

You may be wondering about the two guys posing in the picture. Now all the old photos had people in them, so when these two, who were part of a group having a merry time outside the pub just by the cross, leapt across and posed, wanting to be in the picture, how could I not take it. Of course I have plenty of other photos without anyone, but you know how I like pictures to tell a story, so here it is - Boroughgate, Appleby . . . with a couple of inhabitants!
