Schienenbus - Railbus VT98
A Railbus (Schienenbus) is a small and cheap train for passenger transport that is used on neighborhood lines. They are often based (but not in all cases) on the structural elements of the bus and truck industry. The old Rail buses also look like buses, hence the name.
In all kinds of variants, light cheap trains have been developed in railway history to be able to offer cost-effective transport on less busy sections of the track. The best-known representatives of this category are the West German "Schienenbus" (DB type VT98), Baureihe VT95 and the East German equivalent the "Ferkeltaxe" (DR type VT2.09). The VT98 had a normal bump and pull and could pull a few passenger or freight cars, the VT2.09 had automatic clutches.
Nowadays this type of equipment is often found in tourist railways. In the Netherlands, type VT98 railbuses are located at the South Limburg Steam Train Company (ZSLM). This is in original condition and runs on the borderline between Simpelveld and Vetschau in Germany.
I was able to photograph these just in time. During a walk, I passed a bridge over the railway line when the Schienenbus approached about a hundred meters in front of me. Very quickly the camera from the backpack and quickly made this photo.
Here the railbus just passed the Hocker line / Siegfried line.
For the ZLSM, the bus runs between Simpelveld (NL) and Vetschau (DL). This is on German territory.
