Moeraki Boulders

Travelled from Christchurch to Dunedin today and the further south we went the hotter it got.

We stopped off at a number of places, including Moeraki to visit the boulders.

To those of you who don't know the boulders they are huge (some man high, some knee high) round boulders that the sea has carved from the cliffs and left scattered over a small area of beach. I can never decide if they look more like a gift the cliffs are giving to the sea, or a gift from the sea to the land. Either way they are pretty fascinating.

Many tourists (including us) were stopped here today so it was quite hard getting a shot that didn't have people in it. We decided to walk further down the beach to where we thought there might be more boulders way off in the distance. There were (about a kilometre away), although they were a lot more broken up than the ones we usually go to. Still, not a wasted trip as the walk was refreshing in the sea breeze with our feet in the water.

These boulders are from the 'usual' ones people visit - I've just cropped out the people to give an idea of the almost mystical feel the place can have.

Gormac suggests you make them bigger.
