Assembly 2

This follows on from my blip from a few days ago.

‘Assembly’ is a series of 3 related sculptures (this is a different one to the other day’s blip) by artist Matt Baker at Govan Riverside. They mark the probable site of Doomster Hill, a man-made earthwork which was the parliament hill of the kingdom of Strathclyde for around 200 years, c1000AD. (The kings of Strathclyde are buried in a nearby churchyard). It stood on this land for more than 1000 years before being levelled in 1850 for the shipyards.

The steel evokes the shipyards that were built over the site; rusted steel would have been a familiar part of this landscape.

The wording on the cog at the top [see Extra collage] has a phrase with an extra ‘is’ ; the artist states that this can be read two ways – either a historical statement of the significance of the land or as a statement of personal responsibility.
