Shetland's Political Street Kerbie
This made me laugh today, the two front runners in the Shetland by election race have election offices directly opposite each other on the narrow main old and beautiful shopping drag in Lerwick. They are engaged in all out signage warfare to try and grab the unsuspecting passer by's attention. I say unsuspecting, but that can't be true, as there can't be a Shetlander who doesn't know there is an election on, there is so much party political paraphernalia everywhere.
My work trip for interviews and presentations has coincided with the eve of one of the most commented on Scottish Parliament by elections for some time. I got the inside track from some natives today, interesting times, their thoughts were that the influx of activists had majorly irritated folks, but yet they also thought the SNP candidate himself came off really well/best in the hustings as the most earnest, informed, knowledgeable and capable. I also picked up that the lib Dem trying to hold the traditional seat to her party retains a strong core following, but only on the basis of being the traditional Shetland return as opposed to having a personal following or belief in ability. It might be a really, really close call or swing fairly significantly. Maybe Boris Johnson's unbelievably arrogant move today will play a big role in influencing undecideds tomorrow....but which way, who knows.
