Once there was a village that fell into the Sea
The instability of the coastal cliffs around here is emphasized by the history of Kettleness. On one December night in 1829, the cliff slumped slowly into the sea taking the entire village with it. Villagers were rescued seawards, by an alum ship anchored offshore. Although alum mining was resumed, the rebuilding of the settlement never achieved its former size., and never on the original site which was that grey area on the far headland
