American Cemetery, Normandy
We had a relaxing day today, but also seemed to get lots ticked off my list.
Morning was spent relaxing after breakfast by our tent, reading. It is something that we didn't do a lot of when the children were small and needed attention. But now, I might read a whole book in a week!! (Yes, I know that's not much to most of you, but I get bored/itchy feet to do other things, and in civilian life it takes me 6 months to read a book).
We had coffee at the campsite bar at 11 ish. It was extremely cheap. 3 euros 60. I thought I'd misheard him! We took our pain au chocolat with us to eat! Then we went for a long circular walk out into the countryside. It was mostly along the single track road, passing through a few hamlets, then back through a field recently ploughed. Lovely open countryside, but not far from the sea. Like home really!
We had a leisurely french lunch. Baguette and salad. After a cup of tea we drove in to Port en Bessin to explore. A lovely port, quite busy for a sunday. From there we drove along the coast to the American cemetery where we spent an hour. A beautiful memorial built by the Americans, to the American soldiers who died. They were bringing down the flags at 5pm in a very serious ceremony, so it was nice to catch that. Beautiful views over Omaha beach, we were able to walk between some of the graves. Many who died on D Day. How sad. Many soon afterwards. In all over 9000 american soldiers buried here.
At 6 we drove back to Port en Bessin for a relaxed pizza and ice cream in one of the many restaurants alongside the water. It is a busy fishing port, and boats were in and out the whole time we were there.
Now 'home' for a nice cup of tea...and a bit more of my book!
