Down memory lane
Coming from a Welsh rural background myself I was keen to visit Auchindrain, six miles south of Inveraray, a remote museum of a small farming community known as a township going back to 1500 on the west coast of Scotland.
Yes bits of it did resonate with Wales (see extra photos).
Auchindrain was the last one in Scotland, remaining a genuine community into the 1930s before the number of tenants dropped to just one. Farming ended here in 1963, the last people moved away in 1967, and the township has been open to visitors as a museum since 1968.
Because it escaped the Highland Clearances in the late 18thand 19thcenturies it remains a unique piece of Scottish rural history.
Today it’s run by a trust staffed by volunteers., like Jeny (pictured) a Dutch intern, a history graduate , keen to see what medieval rural life was like in Scotland
