Running up a hill against cannon!!!! doh!
Around 1pm in on the 16rh April 1746 the last battle ever fought on British soil began at Culloden field, a few miles south of Inverness.
The British Army was led by the Duke of Cumberland, and the "Jacobite's" a loose collection of Highland Clans were led by Charles Edward Stewart born 1720 in Rome.
The Bonnie Prince on this day decided to take personal charge of the now seriously undermanned, undersupplied, and very tired army, and after an initiall salvo from what was very poor Highland canon power the Prince was confident that the British army would charge.
The charge never came, and in shear frustration the Prince ordered the Highlanders to unleash what was thought to be there best weapon the "fearsome Highland charge", which in this case would be up hill and on very boggy ground.
The Highlanders were routed, cut down by canon and musket power, and Government troops were ordered to show no mercy.
The Bonnie Prince escaped the massacre and after an epic journey across the Highlands he escaped to Skye famously dressed as a women in the care of one Flora Macdonald (1722-1790).
The part of the story that's not often told is that Charles Edward Stewart returned to London the next year and tried unsuccessfully to buy the throne, but returned to Italy empty handed and died a sad alcoholic, estranged from most of his family.
