Highly Unsprung

If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air

Avithos beach at dusk on our second night. Gentle waves lapping at our feet, our favourite tipples, jaw dropping sunset changing from blues to blazing russet. It was a bit of a "wow" moment, or as Tess called it, her Mama Mia moment.

Talking of Tess, she made her whole week Instagram picture perfect by adopting poses at every opportunity, selfie tastic, and Avithos beach at dusk is made for that. With the exception of when any of the rest of us were in the pic, that ruled it out being Instagram worthy big time, hahaha.

Sam is not so enthralled by pubs generally, even if they are outside on a beautiful beach and was relieved when we started the meander home.

We were lucky enough to be staying in Svoronata, a rural, coastal scattered village with hidden green valley paths down to the sea, olive groves, wineries and old school tavernas full of locals and Greek visitors from the mainland. Well away from the busier resort towns that cater for and filter the experience to please the Full English Breakfast crowd and all that entails.

The two local Avithos tavernas, nestled into the valley, were absolutely beautiful to sit in and look out to sea. All family run, with gorgeous Greek food. And Spiros's taverna up in the village was just the best.

I hope the wonderful old school tavernas long outlast the beach bar, which lost its novelty on the second visit, but the beauty of the beach and sunset will outlast us all.
