Where the buffalo roam
In 1919, William Wrigley, from the chewing gum family, gained control of Catalina Island which is 26-miles long and 8-miles wide. Avalon, which sits on a little bay on the southern tip, is the only city. Wrigley oversaw much of the development of Avalon, including the construction of the landmark Catalina Casino.
Around that time, a herd of Buffalo were brought to the island for a Zane Grey silent movie. The studio couldn't afford to bring them back, so they just left them. Today, 200 buffalo roam the island wilderness. We saw a few.
In later years, the Wrigley's donated 88% of the island to a nature conservancy. The buffalo have never been to the casino, but somehow they hit the jackpot.
