On Edge
A newly arrived immigrant wants to earn money to live and support his family. He finds a labouring job on a building site where the boss takes his passport and makes him pay for safety equipment out of his wages. Once he's learnt the ropes he works hard and gets on fine with most of his workmates until the authorities discover him. Then his workmates turn on him.
A shout-out to whoever decided to book Justice in Motion, a professional physical theatre company made up of artists and collaborators passionate about art and social justice, to perform On Edge outside the old Oxford prison this evening. The performers built the set (extra) as they went along, transforming bricks and scaffolding planks to shared bunks in a dormitory and turning a hard hat and some scarves into our protagonists wife. The safety notices around the site were all about modern slavery.
Standing room only. Excellent.
