Romeo, Romeo ...

Today book club was supposed to be at an open air theatre production of Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately all the rain turned the park into a swamp so instead of cancelling it, they managed to rehouse the performance in a nearby Methodist church hall.

It was a really modern take on the play with Romeo following the Shakespearean text but then others in the scene having 'modern day' conversations and taking selfies.  Sounds like it shouldn't work, but it really did and was fantastic.

I hadn't noticed that it would be a BSL interpreted performance so I tended to look in the opposite direction to everyone else.  When they introduced her and I gave her the BSL version of applause, her face lit up and she signed 'thank you' to me.  I guess when you've spent hours translating a script, you want to know that someone is going to enjoy what you do.

I have to say Romeo was absolutely gorgeous.  If only I was 20 years younger...
